Board the Windeward Bound for an intimate sailing experience into Port Davey in the pristine Tasmanian Southwest Wilderness World Heritage area.
Our unique 8 day expedition travels through Tasmania’s beautiful World Heritage area of Port Davey, an untouched waterway full of natural wonder. Let us take you to some of Tasmania’s most spectacular and inaccessible places, including Melaleuca, the gateway to the southwest and South East Cape where our early settlers turned north to establish Hobart. You will be immersed in jaw-dropping scenery, incredible pioneer history and abundant nature and wildlife.
The Windeward Bound is an authentic traditional square-rigged Tall Ship and replicates early vessels that explored and worked in this area. Your sailing experience is enhanced by beautiful Tasmanian food and wine, the comfort of hot showers and restful bunks after an exciting day exploring.
Our exclusive expeditions are run twice a year and are open to a maximum number of ten people. This is an all-inclusive package including all food, drinks and activities for AUD $4850 (this is our first increase in 6 years). We require a 50% deposit on booking.

Your Itinerary:
The itinerary below is a guide only. Most of the activities will happen, but are subject to weather and will happen in no specific order. Other activities in Port Davey may be substituted if weather conditions in the South West require it.
Day 1 – Departing Hobart, meander down the D'Entrecasteaux channel, past Bruny Island and into the Southern Ocean.
Day 2 – Arrive in spectacular Port Davey to enjoy the uninhabited surrounds. Weather permitting, activities could include an expedition to Davey Gorge.
Days 3 to 5 – Discover the amazing history and scenery of this pristine part of the world. Activities could include exploring incredible destinations such as Melaleuca, Bathurst Harbour, Spring River and a walk up Mount Beattie.
Day 6 – A walk up Mount Parry (staged climb, according to your fitness) to view the entire Port Davey area.
Day 7 – Begin the sail back by rounding the dramatic South West Cape and turning East for South East Cape before turning north for Hobart. Possible stop at Recherche Bay, a significant former settlement and early French scientific site from 1792.
Day 8 – Following a leisurely breakfast in Recherche Bay, make our way into Hobart in the late afternoon, under sail if wind conditions permit.
Guests are advised to book return travel arrangements, such as flights, at least two days post-due voyage return date; as weather in the Southwest has been known to impact on the sailing schedule.
The Windeward Bound Trust is a registered charity and proceeds from operations are used to ensure the continuing provision of personal development Sail Training and maritime career training opportunities for deserving young Australians.

What our Passengers say:
“Time in Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour had long been an ambition and this voyage gave me an experience far beyond what I hoped for. ”
“Going through these photos was a real pleasure in re-living a wonderful, wonderful trip. A lot of fun, great company, and great food.”
“The journey was very special, such a beautiful pristine region. And compliments to Jan also, for her tasty, varied meals!”
“Magic!
In spite of some unfriendly weather Captain Parry, Suzie and Bill were able to bring us to the beautiful pristine Port Davey wilderness area and also provide some additional experiences ( and two additional nights on board) as well.
Along the way they shared their knowledge of the area, the beautiful ship we were sailing in and wooden boats in general to make the experience one in a lifetime for me.
The young, volunteer crew were professional, competent and so friendly and went out of their way to care for us and ensure we had a safe and rewarding experience. They were all a credit to the ship and the Windeward Bound organisation.
Finally, Kate, our beautiful Chef, produced so many beautiful dishes in a tiny galley, each one more creative and tastier than the last. Fresh produce, beautiful wines and cheeses and Kate’s great humour and hard work made an unforgettable experience even more memorable
Thank you again to everyone involved in this voyage - it was a magnificent experience which I would recommend to anyone.”
